The whole our childhood we learn many things. We study different topics. We train many skills. Then right after we leave the school many of us stop learning.
We still learn and gain real experience at our job. That means the growth in the field of our work. But for most of us the learning process ends with the last day of our school.
It also happened to me.
After the university I continued working as a software developer. It’s true that I still had to study new things about programming. But I stopped learning anything else.
I was not reading books at all because I wasn’t used to it. I also wasn’t interested in any new areas so much that I’d learn about them in my free time.
I thought it’s not important to learn any more.
My thought was that I’ve been already learning too long. That now is the time to work and enjoy real life.
Boy was I wrong.
I was settled in my life. I had a good job. I was spending my free time with family, friends, watching TV and playing computer games. It was great but only for some time.
The boredom came into my life.
Weeks were passing by. And I realized that I have no goals. My only goal was a happy family.
I had to look for a change.
How can I stop being bored and become more successful? How can I better support my family and find the meaning of my life?
Finally I found it.
The biggest key to better life and success which was missing in my life.
Back to school days
Not in an educational institution. But in the real world.
I’ve started to read books, follow blogs, listen to podcasts and take courses.
Since then I’ve learned many great things.
It only opened my eyes to other interesting areas and skills.
There are tons of great books, courses, seminars you can learn from. There are many things you can try and skills you can build.
And here comes the biggest problem: “But I don’t have time.”
Yes, I used to say the same words.
But it’s only an excuse.
Do you find time to read your personal emails every day? What about social media, news or TV?
There’s always time. But you have to manage it.
You can start finding hidden spaces for things you really want to do.
Just search for small pockets of free time during the day when you can learn or apply something new into your life. Start small and you’ll see how much “free” time you have.
You’ll discover things you are doing automatically but doesn’t mean too much for you. Things which are not improving yourself. Which are not driving you towards your goals and dreams.
Find 5 minutes in the morning, 10 minutes while you commute and 15 minutes in the evening.
Soon you realize there’s so much time to learn new things.
It’s YOUR decision. You are the master of your life.
Best ways for learning:
- Books, podcasts, seminars, courses – anything which helps you grow. Read good books, listen to podcasts of successful people. Attend seminars, take classes or do online courses. Learn new things which are helping you towards your goals. Be a lifelong learner.
- Learn from the best – learn from the most successful people. Find someone who you admire, who reached something you’d like to achieve. Who can inspire you and show you the right path. If he’s done it you can do it too. Study him and apply the same things and principles to your life. People I learn the most from are Tony Robbins, Ramit Sethi, Tim Ferriss, Leo Babauta.
- Improve your skills – improve all skills you need in your profession or business. Learn new skills you’re interested in. And don’t forget also on general skills which can improve your success like communication skills. It’s extremely important to communicate with other people today.
- Take care of your body – learn about healthy nutrition and exercising. Great health and body condition gives you energy to everything you want to do. But the most important part is the execution. Learn about these topics and then try things. Reflect what’s working, keep it and change the things which don’t suit you. Don’t be afraid to try new stuff.
Investing in yourself is the best thing you can do. Nobody can tax it away, they can’t steal it from you. It’s yours forever and you get it back ten-fold. These are the words of one of the most successful people on our planet, Warren Buffett.
Don’t forget that learning things alone doesn’t mean anything if you don’t use them in real life.
You have to take actions and execute what you’ve learned to gain real experience.
Only then you’ll see what works and what don’t.
Repeat the things which work while improving others. You can definitely reach your goals and dreams.
Invest in yourself and become the master of your own success.
