… even with full-time job and family with two small kids
I clearly remember the day my life has changed forever.
Christmas time, 28th December 2012. I was playing football manager as usual when my daughter was sleeping and wife watching the TV. I was looking into my bank account, counting all family expenses. Trying to find a way where to save more money to be able to go to summer vacation next year. I was asking myself a simple question “Where can I save more money?”.
I was playing the football manager every free minute (also during family time)
I always wanted to be rich but at the same time I was content with my life. I don’t know why. I think it was within me inherited from my parents. All the life they had decent stable jobs. Our family was above average. Did not have financial problems. Living normally as most people do.
Suddenly a great idea popped in my head.
Why to save more when I can earn more?
My father used to say to me “You won’t get rich by working for somebody else”. It was in my head all the time. But he didn’t show me any way how to achieve that. And because I didn’t have any business person around me I saw only the classic way.
There was only corporate and consumer life for me. My parents taught me: go to a college, find a stable well-paid job, raise a family, save for retirement and when you’ll be 65 maybe you’ll be able to travel the world. If you’ll be lucky to be still alive and physically able to walk.
What the hell? Really is that the “right” way most people take?
Well, I was on this path for 28 years.
I need to create my own business
On that life-changing day I remembered a book sitting in my computer. My former colleague gave it to me 2 years before and told me to read it when I’ll have kids. It was the first book I read outside of school. The book was Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. I wish he told me to read it immediately.
After I read it I was no more the same person. It opened the whole new world for me. Why are not these business and self-development books mandatory in the school?
I realized that I have to start reading, learning and growing again. And the most important, create my own business.
It was a no-brainer for me.
There were always around me cars I wanted to drive, houses I wanted to own and places I wanted to visit with my friends and family. I wanted to go skiing in the middle of the week, don’t have to ask anybody. Don’t have to count remaining vacation days. Have money to eat anything in an amazing restaurant on the beach.
To have FREEDOM.
I always wanted to be able to work anytime and anywhere. I knew I had to work to earn money. But I didn’t know about the business model which would suit this.
Until I’ve stumbled upon the blog The Smart Passive Income by Pat Flynn.
I was dreaming about life with freedom
About the online business.
When I saw those successful people like Tony Robbins, Ramit Sethi, Pat Flynn or Derek Halpern I was over the moon. They earn money during the time they sleep or travel the world. If they have to work on something they just open their laptop and do whatever is needed.
I want the same.
That’s my goal. Have the freedom to work anytime from anywhere in the world and
I dream about waking up early in the morning on a sunny beach apartment. Going out on a terrace with a cup of coffee. Open the laptop and do the work I love. Write a post or build a product to help many people on this planet.
My mission is to help other people who are trapped in the corporate life and want to create their own business to get out of it. As I do myself. I still work 9-5 as a software developer. I like that work but don’t love it. The results of my work do not help people live their lives better. Be more successful and happy.
Once I see smiles of people and get thankful comments or emails I’ll be truly happy. As Tony Robbins says:
I want to share the solutions which work for me. Add as much value to people as possible. To help them live their dreams.
I thought it will be easy with an online building course
One day after taking advice from other bloggers I’ve started following Ramit Sethi. A bit weird indian guy with a not very truthful website name at a first glance. It turned out to be a great move. I started receiving emails describing my ideal life. The way I wanted to live my life and my dreams.
I’ve later discovered he was opening a premium course Zero To Launch for building an online business. It looked perfect for me but it was very expensive. I was waiting for the last moment to decide and am glad I’ve bought it. I’m very happy my wife has approved it to me ;-). Yep, I didn’t want to do it behind her back.
As I’ve discovered this course is no-brainer.
Why I bought it? Because I didn’t have any experience building online business. I didn’t have time to learn everything on my own. To read hundreds of books and then try to apply the takeaways from them. Time to try things and see what works and what doesn’t on my own. I needed a proven system which I would use to build my business. I went ALL-IN with this one.
When the course started I was very motivated. I watched the videos every free minute. I followed it before the work, after the work and in the evening. I was doing the worksheets and taking some actions. But after the first two weeks it got worse.
I started falling behind other students in the course.
Following a business idea which was not working for me. There were a lot of signs that it would not work but I had closed eyes. I didn’t want to fall behind so I pushed through to next modules even though I had not yet fully completed the first one.
Other students were sharing their amazing successes in the supporting community as I struggled. They seemed to progress very quickly. I was upset that I cannot maintain their tempo. That I cannot get any results.
I started to feel overwhelmed.
All actions in the worksheets were out of my comfort zone. Something I haven’t experienced before. It was impossible to push myself to take them. Especially in the evening.
Watching TV and playing video games was on a daily program. The only thing I was able to think about was relax. After 9 hours or more at work, time with family and workout I was in no mood to work anymore on my side business.
Every day I told myself “I’ll work hard on my own business tomorrow”. Tomorrow never come though. It got worse and worse. I felt bad about myself. Every time I planned to do something and failed was like a knife into my back.
It got to the point when I was thinking if this is the right path for me. If I will ever be able to build my own thing.
That took me 8 long months.
Time during which other star student earned their 5 or even 6 figures. I just saw their successes and went back to watching TV or playing games. I didn’t think I’ll achieve something.
My biggest mistake was that I was only learning new stuff. Reading blog posts, watching course videos and other interviews. I have to admit that I was waiting for one magic moment which will help me get started. Something out of the blue that will force me to do important stuff in real.
But it did not come. And without any actions it’s not possible to get results. I had to look for something else which would work for me.
Find someone who achieved what you want and model him
During the Christmas 2014 (yes, 2 years after I started my business journey) I took a course Get The Edge from Tony Robbins. At that time I was expecting my second child, son Jakub.
There are many great ideas and action steps in the course. The main thing I learned is that I can achieve anything I want. I just have to know what I want, what my goal is. Then I have to trust myself that I can do anything what I decide to achieve. “Just do it” or in other words take massive actions every day to close the gap between my dreams and reality.
Jakub was born in January and I felt it is the right motivation to start working hard.
The goal was clear. Build my own online business and start earning money. I knew all the WHYs. I have to achieve it to have freedom, to have more time for my family, be able to travel, to work anytime and anywhere. To help people, add value to them, make the world a better place. To grow constantly and have fun. I have those WHYs on my refrigerator to see them every day.
Other great thing I learned from Tony was to model someone who achieved the same thing I want to achieve.
There is a perfect person for me. It’s Primoz Bozic from Skyrocket Your Productivity. Now my coach inside two courses. By the way, he is the person who persuaded me to buy the ZTL course.
When I still hesitated buying the course I read his “brutally honest review of ZTL” blog post. I saw him as a young guy from small country Slovenia (similar to me living in Slovakia). I saw his successes and told myself that if he can achieve it so can I do.
I liked him already from the forums. He always gives valuable advice to people, take actions within the courses and make sure to progress successfully as fast as possible. There is a ton I can learn from my idol. I decided to go in his footsteps following just one goal. Building my own side business.
But “I don’t have time” with two small kids and full-time job
I’ve learned great insights and strategies from Primoz which I applied and saw some results. But there was still that big problem with the lack of free time.
The newborn in the house made it very difficult to have some time for myself. One kid can be handled by two parents pretty easily. To handle two and more kids it’s way harder. I’d say it grows exponentially.
With the struggles to work in the evening I mentioned earlier it is not possible to work in the evening regularly. After the whole day at work and then with family I fall into the bed exhausted as soon as I’m allowed by kids. I even cut off the TV and uninstalled all video games to be able to focus on business. Yet it was still not possible to work focused in the evening.
I was looking for a solution and found it.
Work for myself first
I don’t know how it came to me. I think I read about a writing challenge. It was about writing 500 words a day. There was a big tip from the guy. Write in the morning and start with just one sentence. Aim and focus to write just one sentence. The rest will come automatically once it is on a paper or screen.
Benjamin Franklin was waking up at 5 a.m. and every day he asked himself “What good shall I do this day?”.
When I read about it I immediately switched to working in the morning on my business. It is not a problem for me as I was waking up at 6am already. The only difference is that I don’t hurry into the work. I rather work on my own things for an hour and then come home an hour later. My family is OK with it so I keep working this way.
By working in the morning there are lots of advantages. I’m refreshed after the good sleep, full of energy and willpower, I can focus 100% because there are no disturbing thoughts which later in the day appear from all the things I experience. I’m not disturbed by anybody because my family still sleeps. I don’t have the urge to check emails, social media or news.
How can you work the same way?
To be able to have free time in the morning you need to change your routine. Either you remove some of the morning rituals and things you do regularly. Or you start waking up earlier.
The only way to wake up earlier is to go to the bed earlier.
So if you want to have an hour for you in the morning you should go to sleep an hour earlier than usually. I recommend to sleep for 7 hours. It is well known that recommendations for optimal sleep are 6,5 – 7,5 hours.
- Decide for how long you want to work in the morning. When you start creating this habit it should be something between 5 -15 minutes. You can always write some ideas or plan something in those 5 minutes. Just sit down with pen and paper and do something relevant. When you get used to it increase the amount. I aim for at least 30 minutes. It’s hard with the small babies which can interrupt me. But 30 minutes are easy to get done.
- Set up the wake up time to your usual time minus the working time. For example if you now wake up at 6am and want to work for 30 minutes, set up your alarm at 5:30 am.
- Count backwards the desired length of sleep. As I said 7 hours is optimum. Therefore your bedtime should be 10:30 pm. If your kids don’t have regular schedule like currently my son it’s hard to have it regular. Sometimes I sleep shorter like 6 hours but I aim for 7 and to have the regular routine. So the weekends are included.
- Set up an evening alarm 1 hour prior to bedtime. It’s important not to forget you should go to bed earlier. Setup the alarm to exact hour when you’ll start preparing yourself and your environment for sleep. It’s great to also prepare everything for the next day, like clothes, meals to work or for kids. Everything which you can. So setup the alarm even earlier. This way you’ll save the energy and thoughts about everything you need to prepare in the morning.
- Tell your partner about it ;-). I’m sure he or she will accept that when you’ll maintain the level of presence and time dedicated for him.
I’m currently waking up between 5 – 5:30 am. It’s hard to set up the exact time as my small son does not have regular routine. Sometimes I’m still with him at 10:30 pm and sometimes he sleeps already at 9pm.
I count with the sleep time between 6 – 7 hours and adjust every day. 30 minutes in the morning can be achieved in any case I think. You’ll just have to try and adapt for your current situation. Don’t be upset when it falls apart sometimes e.g. after the party. Know what you want and try to achieve it. See what works and adjust what doesn’t.
One big hint: to be able to do that I had to stop watching TV. When I still want to watch champions league football match it interrupts my schedule. But I also need some time to relax so I allow it myself some days. In that case I sleep shorter if I have energy from previous day or go to work later in the morning to keep momentum by working at least 30 minutes on my business.
Free time every morning is nothing without right actions
If you have full-time job and kids as I do, it is very important to know what to work on at the right moment. To be laser-focused on every action you take.
I bet you don’t want to do random things without any results. What you want to see are real results as fast as possible.
