For example when we say to ourselves we won’t watch TV today and work on the side-business instead. But then we watch it anyway or play the video game.
That’s another wasted opportunity to improve our life.
I know the guilt we feel inside us every time this happens.
Right at the start of 2015 I was stuck. My second child Jakub was born.
It’s been a wonderful moment of my life. But it meant a lot less time for my side-biz which I wanted to skyrocket at that time.
Unexpectedly, my accountability partner told me that Tony Robbins will host a seminar in Poland. I quickly checked event info. Perfect, tickets were available.
I was excited like a small child. That life-changing event has been on my bucket list.
I thought it would be a game-changer
It’s been very intense three days. Exhausting as well but the value and lessons I got will stay with me forever.
Energy in the conference room with 8,000 like-minded people was phenomenal. We were listening, taking notes and doing real exercises.
To hear Tony’s teachings directly from him instead of audiobooks was unforgettable.
I was sure it’ll change my life forever.
There has been a lot of ideas, tactics and strategies to implement. I was motivated but didn’t know where to start.
I wanted to do all at once
Still every day had only 24 hours. I had my full-time job, two small kids at home and only so many free minutes in the day to act.
For example, I wanted to do the perfect one-hour morning routine which would set me up for a success every single day. However I was not able to wake up that early. Or my kids scrapped my plan to go to bed early.
It’s been happening over and over again. I tried to fight it with everything I learned from Tony. It seemed working for couple of weeks.
However I could not sustain the tempo I set. I made mistakes, failed and started losing one positive thing at a time.
Eventually I got back to my old routine and habits.
There were still some bursts of motivation later to implement some of his advice. Though nothing lasted more than a week or two.
When I think about it now I feel like I’ve thrown away those $1,000 invested into myself.
I tried tactic after tactic
What I lacked was the long-term execution.
Every time I started something I stopped right before it even had a room to bring results. I had lots of reasons why not to continue.
I was not able to stick with anything until it really starts working. I kept switching between various things.
Always thinking of different income streams to get me out of my day job quicker. I found it hard to stick with one idea to see it through to fruition.
I wanted success, quickly. To start earning money so I could quit my boring job. The job which made me feel like a little piece of my soul dies each day going there.
I’ve struggled with all the possible options and shiny objects
His response was magnificent. He said: “Focus on one thing at a time”.
He asked me what my current #1 goal is.
At that moment I wanted to do too many things at once. To grow my email list by writing guest posts and doing outreach, find coaching clients, doing outreach and build relationships with influencers, write epic content for my blog. I was also thinking about creating virtual summit. It was hard to focus.
I answered Primoz’s question: #1 thing for me was to narrow down my business idea by doing interviews with my potential audience. That’s been my ONE thing for the following month.
My plan was simple:
- find a relevant person and reach out
- schedule an interview
- prepare questions
- JUST DO IT
- process key takeaways
It’s been a breakthrough for me. Focusing fully on that one thing – interviews – it’s been easy. Without that focus I’d be frazzled again jumping around.
One thing at a time
How can you apply the same?
Find ONE major thing you’re gonna be working on in the next few weeks. Make it a project with a specific deadline.
Like a project at work. But this will be for yourself.
For example write new blog post in one week, have 10 interviews with potential customers in a month, or grow your email list from 100 to 500 subscribers in 60 days.
Be really specific. Write it down in detail, plan the next steps and put a deadline on it. It should be something important and exciting which will move you forward towards your bigger goals and dreams.
Screw it, let’s do it
Richard Branson as well as Nike say it simply. “Just do it. Make it happen”.
Take one (even small) action every day. This will build momentum and gets you going.
Don’t aim for the perfection because otherwise you’ll get stuck. Adopt good enough mentality – that’s for me and other perfectionists ;-).
Every time I wanted to make something perfect I struggled. I was hesitant to start working on most important task because I felt it’s too tough. I ended up doing something absolutely unimportant. It’s been just a total waste of time and energy.
Don’t make the same mistakes. Keep hustling and get it done.
